The Call for Organizers of the General Assembly of Delegates and the International Cartographic Conference 2019 is now closed.
Two applications arrived:
The bids will be available for the General Assembly delegates, the decision will be made by the ICA General Assembly on 28 August 2015 in Rio de Janeiro.
The International Cartographic Association invites bids from national members to organize the 17th General Assembly of Delegates and the 29th International Cartographic Conference in 2019 (GA and ICC2019). This invitation is according to the ICA Statutes, Article 9:
The General Assembly of Delegates will normally meet every four years. As a rule, the General Assembly will be held in conjunction with an International Cartographic Conference (ICC).
Any member nation may lodge a bid to host the GA and ICC2019. The GA and ICC are preferably held during the months of July, August or September. A southern hemisphere conference may be scheduled for October/November or March/April. A letter of intent should be sent to the ICA Secretary General and Treasurer, accompanied by completed bid documents containing the following details
The bidding is competitive and it is important that as much information as possible is provided to the General Assembly. Please be aware, that bids will only be accepted, if the bid documents are signed by the head of the national member organization (ICA national member) and the bid documents are complete.
The deadline for submitting a successful bid to the Secretary-General of ICA is 15 March 2015, 24:00 GMT.
The bids should be submitted in paper form (one signed copy, per surface mail) and electronically (PDF file, per email).
Accepted bids will be handled as all other General Assembly documents. They will be made available on the ICA website GA2015 section after 23 March 2015 (five months before the first session of the GA2015) in alphabetical order according to the Country Name of the bidding organisation. This section will be made available for all national delegates to the General Assembly.
The Executive Committee of ICA will not conduct any inspection visit prior to the General Assembly. The EC will not provide any selection or shortlist. The EC will not accept any invitation or offer in relation to a bid. The decision will be made only on the basis of the bid documents. Although the EC will be neutral in the process, it will be ready to express their assessment of the submitted documents if demanded from the General Assembly.
For the evaluation process of successful bids the following criteria will especially apply:
The General Assembly will vote on bids at the Second Session on 28 August 2015. Designated representative(s) of the bidding countries will get a 5 minute time slot for presenting their bids in the First Session of the General Assembly of ICA on 23 August 2015 in Rio de Janeiro. We strongly recommend all bidders to have a booth in the Technical Exhibition of the ICC2015 to support their bid.
The voting process will take place according to the ICA Statutes as follows:
Decisions at the General Assembly shall be taken by a show of hands and by a simple majority vote, of those delegates present, who have the right to vote. However, if at least two delegates make a request, the vote shall be taken by ballot. Should there be an equal division of vote, the President shall cast the deciding vote. Voting by proxy will not be permitted and no delegate shall represent or vote for any other member nation.
The successful applicant will be required to sign a formal contract with the ICA Executive Committee defining the relationship between the Conference Organizer 2019 and ICA. The contract is based on the “Guidelines for International Cartographic Conferences and General Assemblies of Delegates” and should be signed by the head of the national member after the General Assembly. A contract template will be available on the ICA website at the end of 2014). In case the contract is not signed in one month after the GA, the EC will offer the organizing right to the applicant who got the second most number of votes.

Archive of the winning entries to the Barbara Petchenik Children’s Map Competition – coordinated by Jeet Atwal
Jeet Atwal worked in the Maps Data and Government Information Centre at Carleton University Library (Ottawa, Canada) for more than 20 years. She was there when the ICA began to organize the biennial Barbara Petchenik World Map Competitions from 1993. In 1996, then-president Fraser Taylor brought the first set of drawings from the competitions to Barbara Farrell (then Head of Map Library at Carleton University), who commissioned Jeet Atwal to organize the storage of all entries. A couple of years later, Susan Jackson (retired Head of Maps, Data and Government Information Centre) gave her full support to begin the project on creating a website to make the stored entries accessible and to participate in other tasks related to the Barbara Petchenik Competition. Jeet Atwal became the main coordinator of the website, which was made public in March 2000.

Jeet Atwal was one of the founding members of the ICA Working Group from 1995, and later of the Commission on Cartography and Children from 1999. She was the organizer of the exhibition entitled “Maps of Our Children’s World” to present a selection of children’s map drawings from 1993 to 2003 organized during the ESRI User Conference in San Diego, California, July 25 to 29, 2005. Jeet Atwal is also one of the authors of the first two volumes of the series “Children Map the World”, which were published by Esri Press in 2005 and 2009.

Iran: Dr. Alireza A. Ardalan is the new director of the National Cartographic Center (NCC) of Iran, as of November 30, 2013. Dr. Ardalan comes from the academic sector (Full Prof. in Geodesy); therefore, he has an emphasis on promoting research and technical issues in Surveying and Geomatics Engineering through mutual cooperation with other National Mapping Agencies.
Chile: Colonel Rony Jara Lecanda became Director of the Military Geographic Institute of Chile (IGM), taking over from Colonel Leonardo Pérez Álvarez. Thus, Colonel Jara also now heads the ICA National Committee of Chile and looks forward to continuing the collaboration of Chile in the ICA.

Orienteering is the most “cartographic” sport; this is the main reason why an orienteering event is regularly part of the ICA international cartographic conferences. There are not too many cartographers who practice orienteering: most of them don’t know this sport at all. In the last few conferences, we had a session (or at least some presentations) on orienteering maps. Now we opened a new website section on ICC orienteering events with maps and photos (of events and sessions). Suggestions and corrections are welcome.
The Open Topic Tenure Track Professorships are the core element of the institutional strategy of the Technical University of Dresden, Germany (TUD). With this novel recruiting procedure, TU Dresden aims at identifying scholars with outstanding records, ideally already in their post-doctoral phase or in the first stages of their careers in academia or business, and offering them a long-term perspective in their individual field of expertise.
The Open Topic Tenure Track Professorships are not targeted at specific areas of expertise or particular academic disciplines. The sole selection criteria are scientific excellence, innovation and the potential to advance research activities at TU Dresden.
Upon positive evaluation after the initial five-year appointment, the professorship will become tenured.

The awards pages now include laudations where they are relevant. Winners of ICA travel awards and of the Children’s World Map Drawing Competition are not only listed, but some photos are linked.

The proceedings of the toponymic sessions at the 25th International Cartographic Conference, Paris, 3–8 July 2011 are now published in the book Toponyms in Cartography, edited by Peter Jordan & Ferjan Ormeling.
The ICA’s 25th International Cartographic Conference in Paris in July 2011 is special from a toponymical point of view because it marks the first meeting of the joint ICA-IGU Commission on Toponymy. Toponymy has been a regular theme for international cartographic conferences for decades, and it is only proper that this has been institutionalized now. The subject of toponymy is now not only dealt within an onomastical context at the biannual ICOS meetings, and within an administrative context at the biannual UNGEGN meetings, but also within a geo-cartographic context at joint ICA-IGU meetings.
The toponymical contributions to the Paris International Cartographic Conference are diverse, both geographically and thematically. Geographically, the focus is on Brazil and on Europe, with a paper on Tunis as a Mediterranean extension of Europe. The subjects range from the collection of geographical names to the operation of names servers, from the use of exonyms in school atlases to the creation of names data bases and from the reconstruction of former namescapes to the creation of new ones.
It’s our pleasure to announce that the ICA received six bids to host the International Cartographic Conference in 2017. Many thanks to all applicants for their willingness to host the conference. Their time and effort spent on preparing the bids is highly appreciated.

For the next International Cartographic Conference in Dresden, Germany (ICC 2013), a limited number of travel scholarships will be awarded to young cartographers who are nationals from developing countries. Please find all details in the PDF document below and note the deadline: 15 November 2012.
