PKO “Cartography”


The Volume 3 “Population. Economy” is a component of the National Atlas of Russia created as the official state edition according to the assignment of the Russian Federation Government. The volume is intended for wide use in the sphere of management, in social, economic, scientific, educational and other fields of activity. Objects of mapping in the volume are the population and economy of the Russian Federation, as well as social and economic systems’ interaction formed by them. The volume contain of 495 pages of compiled maps  and illustrative material which are grouped in 5 sections: General characteristic of the Russian Federation; Population and social development; National economy and economic development; Regions and regional development; Reference section, each of which includes a number of subsections.

The section General characteristic of the Russian Federation is devoted to the maps describing a modern place of Russia in the world according to various social and economic parameters’ change, its geo-economical and geopolitical position, as well as to its territorial aspects and geographical factors of settling and economy.

The section Population and social development” is devoted to characteristic of the population, its social habitat and development. Accordingly there are three subsections: Population and settling, social sphere and socio-political development.As it will be see below in the subsectionPopulation and settling” thematic subjects are presented as follows: aaccommodation and structure of the population, its demographic characteristics and migratory processes, urbanization and cities, labour market and employment, standard of living and health of the population. Characteristic of the basic segment condition and dynamics, as traditionally reflected in geographical atlases (public health services, education, science, culture, trade), and others (living conditions and communal services, recreation, tourism, sports)is given in the subsectionSocial sphere”. The maps reflecting a level of Russia region social development are included in the subsectionSocio-political development”.

The section “National economy and economic development” includes four subsections. The subsection structure is constructed on logic transition from the general characteristic of economy to the consecutive characteristic of the economy basic spheres: Manufacture – Infrastructure – Investment. Thematic subjects in the subsection “Industrial sphere” are given on the basic branches of the “primary” (agriculture, forestry, fish industry and hunting facilities) and “secondary” (industry and construction) spheres of economy. The given subsection is concluded by maps on internal and foreign trade which converts into cash the production of the industrial sphere branches in the internal and external markets. The important information on conditions of market economy in the sphere of human service manufacture is presented in the subsection “Human services”.     It gives about half of the modern Russian total internal product . Branches of tertiary and quaternary spheres of economy are presented in the subsection “Infrastructural sphere”. According to tradition the transport is presented there. It is characterized in the context of transport networks, as well as in the context of separate branches (railway, automobile, water, etc.). A communication is added by the characteristic of the telecommunication infrastructure without which it is impossible to conceive the modern society. New themes are maps on information and market (including bank) infrastructure. Thematic subjects describing not only geography, structure and dynamics of the investments, the largest investment programs, but also investment conditions in regions (including legal matters) are presented in the subsection “Investment sphere”.

The section «Regions and regional development» is devoted to the regional component of the volume. A series of the complex social and economic maps reflecting social and economic structure of large geographical areas and the basic features of regional economy is given there. The given section is also intended for reflection of the Russia’s regional development key problems having long-term character. The basic types of Russia regions (on a level and type of social and economic development, problematical character and stability, long-term prospects of development, level of intervention and assistance from the state, including those within the limits of budgetary federalism) are presented there.

The final «Reference section» includes the dictionary of terms and sources of the information (literary, cartographical, and statistical).
