The
Volume 4 “History. Culture” is a component of the National Atlas of Russia. The volume is intended for wide use in scientific, educational and other kinds of activity. Basic purpose is consistently to open a course of Russia historical development since the most ancient times till the present epoch, to present the modern space-time information on a cultural and natural heritage of the country. The volume contains 496
pages grouped in two sections: History and Culture.
The section “History” consists of subsections covering long time intervals. The
1-st subsection “The most ancient tribes and people in territory of Russia” is devoted to evolution of development and settling of mankind for
the period from Stone up to the Iron Ages. The 2-nd subsection
“States and people of the East Europe at the end of 1 millennium B.C. – beginning of the 1 millennium of Common Era” gives idea about tribes settling (including western and eastern Slavs) and occurrence of primary state formations. The 3-rd subsection “The Old Russian state in IX – the beginning of XIII centuries” reflects process of formation and development of the Old Russian state, struggle of appanage princes for power that led to political dissociation of Russia. The 4-th subsection is devoted to Mongolian - Tatar invasion to Russia, to the establishment of the Tatar yoke, struggle of Russia against foreign conquerors. The 5-th subsection “Unification of Russian lands around Moscow in XIV – the beginning of XV centuries» reflects the process of the united Russian State formation. Subsections 6-10 represent history of the Russian state in XVI – XVII centuries, Russian Empire in XVIII – XX centuries. The basic attention is given to formation of the State territory, administrative division, growth of cities and the population, economy, foreign policy, social movement and geographical discoveries. Subsection 11 “Russia in XX century. The
Soviet period” includes
a set of topics devoted to the establishment of the Soviet power in the
country, to Civil War, the national-state construction of the USSR, socialist
economy, Great Patriotic War and post-war development of the USSR,
disintegration of the USSR
and creation of independent Russia. All
subsections are accompanied by reference texts, illustrations, diagrams; the
chronology of events is also provided.
The
section “Culture” reflects a national heritage of Russia. The section consists of subsections
including art values, architectural or historical - memorial objects, as well
as environment, historical surrounding of cities and rural settlements. The 1-st
subsection “Russia
in the world cultural space” reveals maps devoted to world religions and
people of Russia
in the world, to objects of the World heritage on the territory of Russia.The
2-nd subsection “The cultural and natural heritage” covers an extensive
set of maps. Maps of monuments of archaeological finds, political and military
history, development of science, art and architecture, exploration of space,
lost cultural and natural heritage are presented there. Complex maps of the Russia territory
enable to get idea about a level and prospect of heritage use. Plans of centers
of Russian subject cities, cities rich with monuments of history and culture
are presented there. Separate objects of a heritage, such as monasteries,
manors, citadels are also shown.The 3-rd subsection «Modern culture» is
presented by maps reflecting a network and activity according to specialization
of cultural establishments: museums, theatres, libraries, archives, high
schools. Cultural communications with foreign countries are shown. The 4-th
subsection “Protection and use of the heritage and objects
of culture”
supplements the volume content with data on the organization of activity on
protection and restoration of heritage objects. Establishments and enterprises
engaged in protection, restoration and reconstruction of the cultural heritage,
the public organizations working in this area are specified.
The map
“Cognitive tourism and sight seeing”is placed in the end of section.
The section
is closed with reference data: index of heritage objects, index of terms,
chronological table.
