THE COMPLEX ATLAS OF THE BARNAUL CITY

City territories as most intensively transformed natural territories possessing besides general geographic expressed social and economic characteristics, to the greatest degree contain preconditions for the complex cartographical analysis. An available domestic experience on creation of city territories atlases enables opportunity to display the various information on the nature, industrial potential, social and economic conditions, quality of environment and its comfort for a life in city conditions in systematized and objective way. The complex scientifically referenced atlas of Barnaul is created both in a traditional paper variant, and in the form of electronic cartographic information system. The atlas contains about 60 thematic cartographic products, being original on the content. The structure of the atlas consists of some sections, among which are introduction, historical, environment and resources of territory, social, economic and qualities of the environment. A scale raw includes cartographic bases in scales of 1:100 000, 1:75 000 for city territory and 1:10 000, 1:25 000 for its administrative regions. Maps different scales allow combining visibility and detail of display of a mapped natural-technogenic situation.

In introduction section of the atlas the general data on city are placed, the physical geographical map of Barnaul and its vicinities, a fragment of a space image on its territory with elements of digital relief model is resulted.

The historical section of the atlas contains fragments of archival maps, beginning with S.U.Remezov's map from «The drawing book of Siberia», dated 1701. Fragments of the basic known maps of 18 century on which the site of Barnaul is specified, and also the first city plans, since the plan of 1837 are included also.

The map scheme by stages expansion of city building at 18-20 centuries is resulted. The historical section of the atlas reflects the basic stages of becoming and development of the city, its formation as one of industrial centres of Siberia, since 18 century. Some fragments of historical maps which are being a hand-written kind, are published for the first time.

The section «Environment and resources» gives representation of the Barnaul territory basic physical  and geographical characteristics. The climate, relief, geological structure, engineering-geological and hydro  geological conditions, soil, vegetation, fauna, and also leading natural processes, such, as stream flow and landslide are presented in it. The section is closed by the map of the natural (restored) landscapes which reflects the reconstructed natural complexes as a natural background on which the city was subsequently generated.

Modern landscapes of city essentially differ from natural. They can be subdivided into 4 categories: Natural one with elements of regulation, natural anthropogenous, architecturally residential and industrial. The map of modern landscapes opens the social and economic section of the atlas which includes the industry, power, demography, transport, communication, municipal services, public health services, trade, etc. Maps are accompanied by schedules, tables and diagrams of facts. Territorial and demographic dynamics of city are shown.

The separate section is devoted to administrative regions of city. On region maps the basic industrial and welfare objects, the road and transport network, housing estate are displayed. The section comes to the end with the Plan of city perspective development  

The big attention is given to development of section «Quality of the environment», containing maps describing an available housing of city, degree of an accomplishment,  level of air pool and superficial waters, of pollutions, medical  and ecological conditions, sanitary and hygienic condition. Here a zoning on a set of adverse ecological factors is presented.

The concept, subject domain, the thematic content, approaches and techniques of map compilation for the popular scientific atlas of Barnaul are original. At drawing up of maps the modern requirements to complex cartographic products are considered and observed. The practical importance of the compiled atlas is defined by its high cognitive level, an opportunity to increase efficiency of works on information support of decisions on management of the city territory.
