PRELIMINARY STUDY ON TIME SERIES ANALYSIS AND ITS APPLICATION IN GLOBAL MAPPING PROJECT

A time series is a sequence of observations taken sequentially in time. Time series analysis is concerned with techniques for the analysis of time series behavior to forecast future values from current and past values. Examples of time series analysis abound in such fields as economics, business, engineering, natural science and social science，and it is being applied in surveying and mapping. The Globe Mapping Project plans to produce land cover data through time series Modis data of 2003 .In this paper, basic concept and common models of time series analysis are summed up and described firstly, and then time series analysis model constructions are prompted by analyzing an example in this project. The potential application of time series analysis in the field of surveying and mapping is also discussed.
