Abstract
Fear of crime is well investigated by law enforcement professionals. Although the difference between police statistics and fear of crime surveys related to prejudice is not well unfolded yet. This study is estab-lished upon a “fear of crime survey” in a typical Hungarian town. This study attempts to compare official crime statistics and residents’ fear of crime. The result supports the idea that public perception of crime may be different from official data. The authors revealed that there is a relation between the fear of crime of the citizens and their prejudice and preconceptions.
