Map of the Month 08/2010: Carte Géologique des Pyrénées

The ICA is happy to feature the 7th Map of the Month: “Carte Géologique des Pyrénées 1:400.000”

At the 24th International Cartography Conference in Santiago, Chile, the map won the 2nd jury’s prize in the category “Thematic Maps”. The jury stated:

Very good balance of highly saturated thematic information with base reference. Dealing very well with multiple categories.

Publisher’s Description: The Pyrenean Geology is represented trough two cross-border maps at 1:400.000 scale, based in the same topographic map. This topographic map was specially designed, including data from the geographical surveys of France and Spain (IGN), and fitted to a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) using SRTM (NASA) as source. This DEM has been shadowed in order to provide altimetry information to the map.

The Geological map: Shows the geology of the Pyrenees and their relative forelands (Aquitania and Ebro Basin). This map displays the rock distribution according to its type, age and structural relationships. The map includes additional information as an interpretative profile of the Pyrenean deep structure based in the ECORS-Pyrenees seismic profile. Likewise, the map includes a Bouguer gravimetric anomaly distribution schema and an structural schema showing location of the main structural units. Additional comments and explanations about map and diagrams fill out the document.

The Quaternary geological map: Shows the importance of the Quaternary Ice Age stamp in the Pyrenees, so as the contrast and relationship with fluvial network development in the northern and southern forelands. This map has a more general interest approach, including diagrams and texts relating geological and climate events with the ancient human settlements.
