Get to know the new ICA commissions for the term 2015–2019

27 commissions and 3 working groups were elected for the term 2015–2019 by the ICA General Assembly 2015. We are currently in the process of updating the website to reflect these changes. Also some of the commissions are still preparing or updating their websites. Honorary Fellowship for David Fairbairn

During ICC 2015, David Fairbairn received the ICA Honorary Fellowship. Below you can read Bill Cartwright‘s laudation:

Dear colleagues,

It gives me great pleasure to give the Laudation on the occasion of the awarding of the ICA Honorary Fellowship to Dr David Fairbairn.

I have known my colleague and friend, David Fairbairn for many years, having first met at British and ICA conferences. As well, David spent a sabbatical at my university whilst undertaking research in Australia.

David and I worked as colleagues for ICA, firstly when we were both Vice-Presidents of ICA, being elected at the Durban, South Africa General Assembly. In the next term we again served ICA, David as Secretary-General & Treasurer, and me as President. So, I know David very well and I am most aware of his dedicated work on behalf of ICA.

So some information about David: David’s ‘day’ job is at the Newcastle University in the United Kingdom. Here he is the Degree Programme Director and undertakes research in the areas of accuracy of crowdsourced data and geovisualization and querying of spatial databases.

In ICA he has held a number of positions, namely:

  • Vice­‐President of ICA in the term 2003–2007
  • Secretary-General & Treasurer in the term 2007–2011
  • He is currently the Chair of the Commission on Education and Training

David has also represented ICA, as one of the ICA representatives (with me) on the Joint Board of Geospatial Information Societies. The Joint Board of Geospatial Information Societies (JBGIS) is a coalition of leading international geospatial societies that speaks on behalf of the geospatial profession at international level, especially to the United Nations and other global stakeholders.

He also supports the ICA agenda, by being the editor of the ICA column in the GIM magazine. He has also written many reference works.

In the United Kingdom, David contributes to the activities of the British Cartographic Society, the British member of ICA. He is a Fellow of this Society and he has been editor of The Cartographic Journal, the journal of the British Cartographic Society.

David has contributed to ICA over many years. He has worked tirelessly as Vice-President, Secretary General & Treasurer and Commission Chair of the Education and Training Commission.

I applaud his devoted work for ICA. I consider that this award to David recognises his devotion to activities that support and grow our Associaton.

Dr David Fairbairn – a most deserved awardee of the International Cartographic Association’s Honorary Fellowship.

Invitation to another ICC 2015 Pre-Conference Workshop at the Federal University of Paraná in Curitiba, Brazil

Joint workshop of the ICA Commissions on Education &Training and Maps & the Internet

All are encouraged to make travel plans in August 2015 which include the pre-conference Joint Workshop of the Commissions on Education & Training and Maps & the Internet. The main International Cartographic Conference will take place in Rio de Janeiro from 23–28 August 2015. The joint workshop will be presented in a more informal environment in the university city of Curitiba from 20–21 August 2015.

This meeting will present an opportunity for cartographers from Brasil, and those from around the world to discuss and present developments at the interface between contemporary internet technologies and current educational practice. It will be held at the Federal University of Parana (a progressive, hi-tech, institution with an excellent reputation for cartographic education). Commission members, professors Claudia Robbi Sluter and Maria Brandalise from the Department of Geomatics will host this meeting in their home institution.

The meeting will overlap another joint ICA Commission meeting (by the ICA Commissions on Use & User Issues, Cognitive Visualization, Geovisualization and Map Design) in the same venue, allowing for attendance at both. Onward travel to the ICC in Rio de Janeiro will be easy. The meeting will be free to attend, and we encourage all cartographers who have an interest in developments in cartographic/geospatial science education, and in Internet Mapping, to contribute.

Contributions in the form of short presentations are sought on the following topics:

  • Teaching about the Internet in Cartographic Education
  • Using the Internet for Cartographic Education
  • Educational material: Content and delivery
  • Educational overview

President’s Blog: Education

Cartography is a domain including technology, art and science. In order to be able to fully deploy the capacity of cartography education in all these areas is key. It happens to be that respective university programmes, professional trainings, and job trainings are more and more changing their scopes and names, leaving the unique competence combination of cartographers, being able to deal with big data, modern technologies and artistic design, vacant.

It is of this reason, that programmes dealing with dedicated cartographic education are of growing importance. Let me highlight here two programmes, which ICA is taking significant note of.

  • The International Course on Management and Applied Techniques in Cartography (IC_Cartotechnology), run by the Institut Cartografic i Geològic de Catalunya, has the aim to provide a wide range of geoinformation professionals with a capacity-building instrument that covers the basis of advanced and up-to-date techniques, tools and critical thinking in cartography. It therefore integrates all the disciplines, approaches and techniques used to acquire and exploit geospatial data. Several ICA collegues have contributed to the first successful edition by giving lectures. The second edition starts in September 2014 and enrolment is still possible.
  • Three central european universities, the Technical University Munich, the Vienna University of Technology and the Technical University Dresden, are offering a joint Master Programme on Cartography. This is a 4-semester programme and it leads into a joint master degree of all three universities. Currently four intakes have been accepted and are in different stages of their studies. The programme is competitive, as only a restricted number of students can be accepted and has so far proven to be most successful in achieving the aim of educating experts with capacity in technologies, data handling and design skills.

Joint ISPRS/ICA Commissions meeting on Education and Training

The ICA Commission on Education and Training is collaborating with the ISPRS Commission VI to present a symposium in May 2014. Titled “Data, Information, and Knowledge Sharing for Geo-Education” the symposium will be held at Wuhan University, Wuhan, China from 19 to 21 May 2014. You are welcome to attend this symposium which has many interesting papers scheduled in the programme: topics in the Plenary session include Contemporary GeoEducation in China, Education for Disaster Resilience, and Education in International Map Year. Parallel sessions follow addressing a range of issues under headings including Technology Transfer and Capacity Development, Web-based Resource Sharing and E-Delivery of Education Services, Promotion of International Collaborative Education Programs, amongst others. The symposium is followed by a student summer school (22-28 May) with eminent visiting professors running intensive courses on topics such as spatial statistics and opensource mapping. The summer camp website is at http://www.lmars.whu.edu.cn/isprscom6/summercamp.html

This will be a one-day programme divided into four sessions, each of them dedicated to one of the participating commissions.
