Dubrovnik (Croatia), October 13–14, 2016

The ICA Commissions on the History of Cartography, Map Production & Geoinformation Management, Use, User & Usability Issues and the Institute of Social Sciences Ivo Pilar (Zagreb, Croatia) invite the submission of abstracts for papers and posters for a joint conference in Dubrovnik (Croatia), the medieval port city on the coast of the Adriatic and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The symposium and planned optional excursions are open to cartographers, geographers, historians, map collectors, academics and everyone with an interest in the diverse aspects of the history of cartography.

Joint ICA meeting in Vienna, November 8–9

All chairs and vice-chairs of the ICA commissions and working groups were invited to join an ICA meeting in Vienna on 8–9 November 2015 to plan and discuss their activities for the term 2015–2019. 46 chairs, vice-chairs and members of the executive committee followed the invitation and spent two intensive workshop days at Technische Universität Wien.

Call for Participation, AAG Special Sessions on Cognition, Visualization, and User Issues

The ICA Commission on Cognitive Issues in Geographic Information Visualization (Amy Griffin, UNSW Canberra), the Commission on Visual Analytics (Anthony Robinson, Penn State) and the Commission on Use, User, and Usability Issues (Kristien Ooms, UGent) invite papers on spatial cognition, geovisual analytics, and usability/utility of geographic information systems to be included in a series of sessions at the 2016 Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting in San Francisco from March 29–April 2, 2015.

We welcome theoretical and empirical contributions exploring geocomputation, geovisualization, navigation and wayfinding, map use, user studies, and methodologies for designing, developing, and evaluating geographic information and tools that leverage geographic data.

Topics for these sessions include (but are not limited to):

geovisualization and visual analytics, implementation and use (technical and/or cognitive issues)
visualization, cognition, and use of uncertainty in decision making
application of geovisualization displays & tools to understanding spatial cognition
methods, techniques and tools for usability research
methods for and application of cognitive theories
human-geovisualization interaction and usability research
cognition of space-time representations
wayfinding and navigation: visualisation, usability and cognitive issues
cognitive map design research
user requirements for and usability of digital geographic displays

In addition to geographers, GIScientists, cartographers, and cognitive or behavioral geographers we also invite speakers from a broad range of disciplines, including psychology, cognitive science, education, HCI, etc.

CARTOCON 2014

Invitation to workshop “Eye tracking: why, when, and how?”

Pre-Conference Workshop to ICC2013
23 (noon)–24 (all day) August 2013 @ the Dresden University of Technology, Germany

The ICA Commissions on Cognitive Visualization, Geovisualization, and Use and User Issues cordially invite you to participate in a hands-on workshop on how to efficiently and effectively collect, analyze, and make sense of eye movement data in empirical user studies. We will work hands-on with real eye-trackers and real data during the workshop, and discuss issues in the group.

This workshop is intended to bring together a broad mix of researchers interested in eye movement data collection methods, ranging from the eye tracking novice who might wish to learn more about this empirical technique, to the seasoned eye tracking expert who wishes to share advanced analytical approaches with other like-minded empirical researchers. Part of the program will use parallel tracks to meet the needs of both novices and experts, and a ‘data challenge’ will form a key component of the meeting.

We thus encourage various avenues for involvement in this hands-on workshop, and call for the following contributions:

Short papers involving …
- Case studies and applications
- Work in progress reports
- Open problems
- Demos and tools
- Novel analysis techniques and methods

The organizers have provided real eye-tracking datasets, together with analytical tasks. The datasets and their descriptions are available here:

We expect your abstract containing a statement of interest, including the type of proposed contribution (ca. 1 page, PDF or MS Word) by February 1, 2013. Please send your contributions to: icacogvis@geo.uzh.ch (Subject: ICC13). Notifications of acceptance: March 1, 2013.

Participation cost: 40 EUR (lunch on the first and second day are included in the workshop fee)
