Announcing AutoCarto 2022: Ethics in Mapping

AutoCarto 2022, the International Research Symposium, is poised to reveal transformative thinking in Cartography and GIScience, November 2-4 on the Esri campus in Redlands, California. The conference sets forth with an agenda focused on Ethics in Mapping: Integrity, Inclusion and Empathy.

AutoCarto 2022 brings attention to ethical responsibilities we face in all aspects of our discipline with conversations on the power of maps and the critical need for integrity and empathy in cartography and GIScience. Submissions on topics from all areas of cartographic and geographic information science are welcome, and topics related to the theme are strongly encouraged, such as Geoethics and Mapping, Territorial Empathy, The Power of Maps for Equity and Social Justice, Geotracking and Social Responsibility, The Potential of GeoAI for Good and Evil, Storytelling for Empowerment and Action, and The Tension Between Privacy and Social Responsibility.

With its long history of bringing together researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and government agencies to share scientific advancements and explore new ideas in cartography and GIScience, the AutoCarto symposium series continues to be standard-bearer of transformational research in cartography and GIScience.

Congress of Cartographic Science successfully held as virtual congress

The 10th Congress of Cartographic Science “The challenge of cartography as an element of territorial management” planned to take place in Resistencia, Argentina, was held as the 1st Virtual International Congress on 4–6 November 2020.

This event, which is biannual in nature, was organized by the Argentine Center of Cartography and the Faculty of Humanities of the National University of the Northeast of the Argentine Republic and its main objective was to contribute to the dissemination of activities, projects and research related to knowledge and cartographic work based on geographic information of a different nature due to its objectives, capture scale and recipients.

Throughout its three long days, the work has been very intense due to the amount and diversity of activities: conferences, scientific papers, technical exhibitions, virtual cafes, posters, awards, etc.

The congress summoned a total of 622 attendees, of which 261 were students and 183 guests. They were connected to the virtual transmission through the YouTube channel, with an average of 200 participants per day, from the 23 Argentine provinces and 14 countries: Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Mexico, Spain, Hungary and the United States.

The transmissions were made live from the city of Resistencia in the province of Chaco, and were broadcast on the YouTube channel of the Congress of Cartographic Science, where they were recorded for public viewing. This meant a total of 33 hours of live transmission, and more than 5,900 reproductions of the 3 days on the YouTube channel so far.

Simultaneously, 6 Virtual Cafes were held with topics such as: Teacher Education and Training, Collaborative Cartography, Fires, Land Cover and Use, Geographical Names, and Climate Change. An average of 20 participants accessed them, and a total of about 100 people got in touch by this means.

Invitation to the Virtual EuroCarto 2020

State-of-the-art information, together with many interesting discussions all around cartography and its many facets – this is what the 2020 (Virtual) EuroCarto is all about, plus much, much more, so be sure to join us between September the 21st and 25th.

This event, which is co-organized by the German, Austrian and Swiss Cartographic Societies, is also the 68th German Cartography Congress as well as a regional conference of the International Cartographic Association (ICA).

As a direct consequence of the Corona Pandemic, holding the planned event in Vienna was unfortunately just not possible. But this virtual edition of EuroCarto 2020 is more than just a substitute:

From Monday to Friday there will be up to three presentation sessions, held either in the early afternoon or early evening.

You can look forward to an extensive and wide-ranging program – which you will find on the conference website eurocarto2020.org. Among the highlights will be Keynotes by Tim Trainor (President of ICA), Gerd Buziek (Esri Deutschland, on the subject of COVID 19-Dashboard) and Wolfgang Kainz (University of Vienna).

The technical and temporal framework has been arranged in such a way that there will also be many opportunities for discussions with your peers and further to the many presentation sessions there will also be further possibilities for professional and social exchange (e.g. at a “Carto Café extra”).

Thanks to our sponsors – Esri DE/CH, Schubert & Franzke, GeoVille Information Systems and Data Processing and the open access journal publisher MDPI – participation in EuroCarto 2020 is free of charge for all!

The mandatory online registration form can be found at eurocarto2020.org – however due to technical restrictions, the number of participants is limited to 400 – so don’t wait, register now to be sure you can join us!

President of the Austrian Cartographic Commission

AutoCarto 2020 Online

We hope this message finds you safe and healthy during these unprecedented times. Regretfully, COVID-19 continues July to spread across the US at alarming rates which diminishes our hope for a safe environment to hold AutoCarto 2020 as an in-person conference in November. Therefore, we have decided to reformat the conference as an online experience.

AutoCarto 2020 will be offered online as a set of extended abstracts and associated recorded presentations. These will go live on Wednesday, November 18, 2020. Viewers will have the opportunity to contact presenters with questions or comments. Extended abstracts will also be published in the AutoCarto 2020 Online Proceedings.

Please find all details here:

  1. An AutoCarto 2020 proceedings will be published on the AutoCarto website. These proceedings will be comprised of extended abstracts that have been reviewed and accepted by the Program Committee. The deadline for submitting a new extended abstract is September 15, 2020. The deadline for submitting a revised abstract is September 30, 2020. The online proceedings will be open-access, and authors will retain copyright over their submissions. Please inform May Yuan, Program Chair, at myuan[at]utdallas.edu if you wish to exclude your extended abstract that has already been accepted from the proceedings.
  2. Authors whose extended abstracts have been accepted are invited to share a presentation of that will be published on the AutoCarto 2020 website alongside their presentation. The deadline for submitting presentations is November 10, 2020. These presentations may be in either PDF format and/or MP4 format. Upload a PDF of the presentation you created using PowerPoint or another presentation tool and/or a recording of your presentation in MP4 format to a cloud storage service (e.g., Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, or OneDrive). Please email the shared link to May Yuan and provide contact information for the corresponding presenter for questions or comments from viewers.
  3. All authors are free to submit their extended abstracts to other conferences since AutoCarto 2020 will not be held as an in-person conference.
  4. Rex Cammack (rcammack[at]unomaha.edu) is editing a Taylor & Francis book and will consider including papers expanded from the extended abstracts for AutoCarto 2020. Please contact Rex if you are interested in contributing a chapter based on your extended abstract.
  5. Authors may also consider submitting their work to the Cartography and Geographic Information Science journal. Please follow the normal submission guidelines for authors.

While we are saddened at the changes we must make to AutoCarto 2020, the Cartography and Geographic Information Society is already beginning to plan AutoCarto 2022 where we will look forward to seeing you in person.

Sincerely,
Aileen Buckley, AutoCarto 2020 Conference Chair
May Yuan, AutoCarto 2020 Program Chair
