ICA Past President 2023–2027
ICA President 2019–2023
Vice-President 2007–2015
I have been involved in cartography my entire professional life. In addition to a long career at the U.S. Census Bureau, culminating in the position of Chief Geospatial Scientist, I continue to work with the United Nations in advancing global geospatial information. When I completed my post-graduate diploma in cartography at Glasgow University, I became a member of the American Cartographic Association (now CaGIS) with the hope of being involved in the ICA which occurred in 1987 in Morelia. Having participated in every ICC since that time, I have realized the benefits of learning from colleagues. In Morelia, I joined the Commission on Atlases, became Commission Chair in 1995 and remained active until I was elected as a Vice President of ICA from 2007-2015. Now, as President of the ICA, my theme is “The relevance and importance of cartography: A call to action.” Maps are truly the great equalizer. They offer a language that transcends the spoken word and as a cartographer, you are the writer, designer and communicator. While text is normally ordinary, the map offers artistic opportunities that elaborate the message through thoughtful and interesting design. As a retired senior executive responsible for a large geography and mapping program, I saw the intrinsic value of the map in so many different environments. It influences the conversation. It can do so much good. It makes a difference. The map is powerful!
