Modernization of technology in hydrography and cartography, particularly evident in the using of multi beam echosounder systems and the production of electronic navigational charts and nautical publications in digital form, calls for modernization of the hydrographic production line. Many world renowned companies offer hydrographic offices complete solutions for the production line from the data compilation to the final product. Such solutions are often too expensive, too large and unavailable to smaller hydrographic offices. That is the reason why smaller hydrographic offices strive to find optimal solutions within their own material and human resources.

As an example of a smaller hydrographic office, the Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia have tried to design its own hydrographic production line from multibeam survey as a starting point for Electronic Navigational Chart as final product. The objective of this paper is to offer guidance to similar hydrographic offices on finding optimal functional solutions for the whole production line at a relatively low cost, satisfying its ultimate purpose – a good, safe and accurate product.
