The analysis of field strengths of radio wave propagation is very important for the station planning of radio and television. Traditional methods that employ manual work a lot are labor-intensive, time-consuming and imprecise in predicting filed strengths. With the development of radio and television techniques and the improvement of the prediction method of radio wave propagation, it is becoming more important in rationality and precision of the calculation of field strength. This paper investigates the application of GIS in managing spatial data and analyzing digital terrain and analyses the application of GIS techniques in the model of radio wave propagation. Object-oriented methodology is used to build the logic model of station and transmitters that assure the consistency of the data improve the efficiency of field strength and reduce the redundancy of data management. The calculation of field strength is implemented in the environment of GIS based on digital elevation data, which can supply dependable evidence for interference analysis and frequency assignment of stations. And it has further application on the computation of population density. This will support the decision for planner of radio station and impulse the digital development of radio and television techniques. Finally, the paper discusses foreground of the generic application of GIS to the propagation model of radio wave.
