Map of the Month 6/2010: Panamap Manhattan

The ICA is happy to feature the 5th Map of the Month: “Urban Mapping, Inc – Panamap Manhattan”

At the 24th International Cartography Conference in Santiago, Chile, the map won the second jury’s prize in the category “Others: Cartography belonging to other themes” with the jury statement:

Unique method for presenting three themes on a single map.

Publisher’s Description: The goal of this project was to create a map that helps people navigate their way through urban space by combining utility and novelty. The unique printing technology used to produce the Panamap allows three different spatially-configured data sets to be displayed on a thin sheet of plastic. The Panamap reveals neighborhoods, streets or subway networks, depending on the angle of viewing. Extensive testing and research and development were required to accomplish this in a compelling way. The end result is a highly interactive, but distinctly low-tech solution that is visually engaging.

  • Medium: The three images (neighborhoods, mass transit and streets) are interlaced by alternating horizontal strips from each. The resulting compound image is calibrated to a specially designed polymer lens substrate. Lenses contain 60–200 microlenses per inch, depending on the desired outcome. This is mounted to a backing, die cut and packaged.
  • Scale: 1:21,120 (1.5″ to 0.5 miles)
