The ICA Commission on Cartography and Children is happy to announce updates from the Barbara Petchenik competition:

New edition of Children Map the World

Esri published a new book using map drawings sent to the competition in 2015.

Children Map the World: Commemorating the International Map Year, volume 4, presents 50 maps created by children ages 5 to 15 for the 2015 International Cartographic Association map design competition, held in Brazil. These drawings convey powerful messages and emotions that reflect the competition’s theme, “My Place in Today’s World.” This volume includes a special atlas of 50 additional maps selected from previous competitions. Featured in part two of this book, the atlas reflects a worldwide celebration of these outstanding maps and their unique role in our world.

Editors José Jesús Reyes Nuñez (Hungary), Carla Cristina R. G. de Sena (Brazil), Necla Ulugtekin (Turkey), and Pilar Sánchez-Ortiz Rodríguez (Spain) are university-level educators. Their collective expertise encompasses the fields of geography, cartography, map design, 3D cartographic modeling, map projections, and education as it relates to children and mapping.

Invitation to the Barbara Petchenik Competition 2017

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the International Cartographic Association and the Commission on Cartography and Children, it is our pleasure to invite you to participate in the next Barbara Petchenik Map Competition 2017, an event created with the aim of promoting the creative representation of the world in graphic form by children.

In 2017, this biannual international award has a special connotation, because it is organized on the frame of activities programmed within the International Map Year. For this reason, the theme for the 2017 competition equals the motto of the International Map Year: “We love maps”. Entries can be nominated in four age groups: under 6 years, 6–8 years, 9–12 years and 13–15 years. The deadline for the participation in the contest is 1 May 2017. Winning entry of the 2015 competition: “The world in our hands” by Pan Sin Yi (15), Malaysia

Winner drawings selected at national level will be displayed in the International Exhibition to be held during the 28th International Cartographic Conference in Washington, DC, USA, from 2–7 July 2017. An international jury will select the best entries by each age group. Additionally there will be a prize issued based on a public vote by the conference participants. New will be the Creativity Award issued by the ICA Commission on Art and Cartography.

Archive of the Barbara Petchenik Competition

The website for the Archive of the Barbara Petchenik Map Competition was updated with a new design and new options to search data. The Barbara Petchenik Collection is maintained by the team working at the Maps, Data & Government Information Centre of the Carleton University Library in Ottawa, Canada. Through this website, users can search and browse through all children map entries since 1993. The address of the website remained the same: https://childrensmaps.library.carleton.ca

Winners of the Barbara Petchenik Competition 2015

The Barbara Petchenik Competition is a biennial map drawing competition for children. The competition is first organized on a national level. The national winners can then compete in the international round, which takes place during the International Cartographic Conferences. This year at ICC2015, 189 drawings from 38 countries were exhibited. An international jury selected 12 winners in 4 categories. There was also a public vote, in which 287 people participated. Please find the wonderful results below.

President’s Blog: Please share your thoughts on the Barbara Petchenik Competition

One of the flagships of the International Cartographic Association’s instruments is the Barbara Petchenik Children Map Drawing Competition. It is amazing how much positive interest this is getting whenever the idea and the results are displayed!

It is truly according to the mission of ICA to promote the role of maps and the importance of cartography, when school children of different age groups all over the world are not only confronted with maps, but are actively involved in making and understanding maps.

The Barbara Petchenik Competition is a real success story. In order to ensure that the success story continues, it is useful to revisit concept, perspectives, thoughts related to this from time to time. This is exactly what Jesus Reyes Nunez, Chair of the ICA Commission on Cartography and Children, is proposing in his document “Exchanging ideas about the Barbara Petchenik Competition“.

May I ask all of you to read his ideas and share your thoughts as a comment below the article. Thank you for helping us to ensure that the Barbara Petchenik Competition remains a success story.

Jeet Atwal retired. We would like to use this occassion to thank her for her work dedicated to the ICA.

Barbara Petchenik Map Competition website

Archive of the winning entries to the Barbara Petchenik Children’s Map Competition – coordinated by Jeet Atwal

Jeet Atwal worked in the Maps Data and Government Information Centre at Carleton University Library (Ottawa, Canada) for more than 20 years. She was there when the ICA began to organize the biennial Barbara Petchenik World Map Competitions from 1993. In 1996, then-president Fraser Taylor brought the first set of drawings from the competitions to Barbara Farrell (then Head of Map Library at Carleton University), who commissioned Jeet Atwal to organize the storage of all entries. A couple of years later, Susan Jackson (retired Head of Maps, Data and Government Information Centre) gave her full support to begin the project on creating a website to make the stored entries accessible and to participate in other tasks related to the Barbara Petchenik Competition. Jeet Atwal became the main coordinator of the website, which was made public in March 2000.

Jeet Atwal is one of the authors of Children Map the World, Volume 2

Jeet Atwal was one of the founding members of the ICA Working Group from 1995, and later of the Commission on Cartography and Children from 1999. She was the organizer of the exhibition entitled “Maps of Our Children’s World” to present a selection of children’s map drawings from 1993 to 2003 organized during the ESRI User Conference in San Diego, California, July 25 to 29, 2005. Jeet Atwal is also one of the authors of the first two volumes of the series “Children Map the World”, which were published by Esri Press in 2005 and 2009.

Entries to the Barbara Petchenik Competition 2013, which were selected for the international level of the competition, can now be accessed here: http://www.explokart.eu/petchenik/ Many thanks to Peter and René van der Krogt for digitizing 155 submissions from 30 countries!

The finalist entries will be on display at the ICC in Dresden, where the winners of the international competition will be selected.

Updates to historical information on the ICA website

25 Years of ICA. 1959–1984. By Ferdinand J. Ormeling Sr., PDF, 13 MB.

The ICA website’s “historical section” was updated.

The awards pages now include laudations where they are relevant. Winners of ICA travel awards and of the Children’s World Map Drawing Competition are not only listed, but some photos are linked.

The list of commissions and working groups of the former ICA General Assembly periods are also expanded. A new section of obituaries (based on former ICA News information) was also created. The full list of ICA Executive Committees is also available.

Ferdinand Ormeling’s book on the 25 years International Cartographic Association 1959–1984 was scanned and converted to text using optical character recognition. It is available on the history page.

Some information is still missing – we invite you to inform us about your knowledge. We are looking forward to your contributions: corrections and photographs are very welcome.

In 2013, the ICA will commemorate the “first” 20 years of the competition with some changes made in interest of improving the development of this biannual international award. The new theme for the 2013 competition is “My place in today’s world” and for the first time the entries can be nominated in four age groups: under 6 years, 6–8 years, 9–12 years and 13–15 years. Winning entries selected at national level will be displayed in the International Exhibition to be held during the 26th ICC in Dresden, Germany from 25–30 August 2013. An international jury will select the best entries by each age group. There will also be a public vote open to all participants for a dedicated public prize.
