Abstract
Currently, there are many difficulties existing in terms of the rules of expression for cartographic knowledge and experience. One type of cartographic rules are applied only to specific aspects of symbolization and various cartographic rules are expressed in different ways. Based on the characteristics of cartographic knowledge and experience, the paper employed a production representation to represent cartographic rules, and proposed a method which could express the characteristics of geographic feature for the representation of cartographic rules. Finally a geospatial data symbolization test was tried on a set of 1:250000 scale geodata. Rules of symbolization control, graphics collision processing, special graphic effects processing and map decoration are constructed and applied on the geodata. Experimental results showed that the method proposed in this paper could express the cartographic knowledge and experience effectively and accelerate converting the geodata to the maps following fixed content.
