Communication effects of choropleth map displayed on the screen Ching Jen Kao* According to the definition of International Cartographic Association Choropleth map is the map which employs distinctive color or shading applied to areas other than those bounded by isoline. Choropleth map have been a standard mapping technique for the visual communication of spatial patterns..During the past decade, numerous researchers have provided different techniques to compare the visual effect between classed and unclassed maps. Besides the statistical issue, this paper employed 6 choropleth maps from Taiwan government website as the sample. These maps displayed the distribution of house unit, but different from traditional style. One third of them keep the original function of choropleth map, the left two thirds with different percent of transparency. That was to say in the latter part some level of the features will be seen at the same time. All subjects were asked to sit in front of the screen to answer the questions about the distribution. The cognitive time duration was the criteria. The aim was to check how the clarity factor will influence the communication effect in choropleth map.
