Abstract
80% of all information in managing a municipality has a place, a geographical location. When the information is used in a geographic information system (GIS) is called the geographic information (or geodata). All municipalities and many authorities in Sweden are using geographic information in a variety of different purposes. Often, the same information are used but in different combinations (information layers that build upon one another) and for different purposes. There is a great social gain in the share information, to register and update at the source and make metadata of the information available and its quality known for other users. Based on EU Directive INSPIRE there is an cooperation in Sweden to create an infrastructure for geodata, primarily between authorities and municipalities, but also companies. In 2019, all the information will be provided as services, and with an overall control of the costs. Eskilstuna municipality participate in the Swedish geodata cooperation and has the goal of building the infrastructure within the municipality organization. Transparent information - about nature conservation interests, transport routes, public transport, water and drains, distances to schools, healthcare facilities and businesses. Improved access to geodata and good modelling tools that make it possible to analyse different options mean better conditions for healthy and sustainable societal development.
