Abstract
Using satellite images some transformations of selected rural landscapes in central Chile are mapped, in order to establish the feasibility of using landscape and cultural heritage resources in defining options for implementing rural tourism activities. On this occasion, the criteria and procedures used in building the cartographic models used in thestage of evaluating the landscapes and then in thefinal maps showing the tourist routes proposed for the area are presented. The methodology is based on processing ASTER digital image, field work and preparation of thematic maps to define routes and tourist attractions that should eventually be part of a local development proposal. The use of digital terrain models - DTM - for visibility analysis was helpful in defining the landscape units that have potential for development of rural tourism. Image processing and the creation of the cartography was performed using the ArcGIS platform. It is expected to obtain as a result a set of cartographic models to be used in the preparation of a local development plan for the rural population, as rural tourism is considered an effective strategy for rural development. This activity aims to complement, diversify and increase the options for employment and income of rural residents, members of their families, and especially young people and women. From the perspective of regional development, a plan that has suitable map available can help to stimulate the development of complementary, synergistic and linking relationships between the various systems that interact in the region. On this occasion, we explored the possibility that local population of the study area see the value of their landscape resources through these cartographic models and become enthusiastic about the idea of proposing rural tourism circuits.
