Abstract
This paper is an attempt to apply the post-structural theoretical understanding of nature/society as socionature, in the analysis of a river basin of southern India. The emerging interdisciplinary conceptualisation of the hydrological cycle as a hydrosocial cycle is used to understand the dynamics of landuse change of the Kuttiyadi River basin of Kerala state. The paper narrates the story of the Introduction of the canal irrigation system to the river basin to overcome the seasonality to improve the overall productivity of the agriculture which ultimately generated new circulatory patterns of water in space and time. This produced new subjectivities and spatialities which can be only understand through the hydrosocial conceptualisations. Both quantitative and qualitative data have been collected and used for the study. The study extensively used GIS and remote sensing for collection of spatial data and analysis.
