Abstract
For cities within the context of rapid urbanization, urban sprawl is an important issue that should be under controlled to utilize urban and environmental sources for improvement of life quality in effective manner. From past to current change detection with recent and conventional techniques, and the researches of the reasons behind that change are required to make estimation the direction of potential urban sprawl in defined time interval. The paper refers to the determination of land-use changes within a 26-years period in one of the rapidly urbanizing districts of the mega city, Istanbul. This study concentrate on Anatolian Side of Istanbul Pendik, Kartal and Sultanbeyli urban areas to evaluate impacts of second airport establishment of Istanbul by assessing urban sprawl before and after the construction. This study has performed in two main stage. First stage includes land use change detection by techniques of remote sensing and geographic information systems and second stage involves execution of the land use and land cover change direction within 1987-2013 period by the help of the change detection techniques. By utilizing the satellite images of LANDSAT TM and LANDSAT 8, Erdas Imagine 9.1 and ArcGIS 9.3 has been used to image processing, analysis, information extraction and modelling stages. Initially, pre-processing steps has implemented on acquired images. Unsupervised classification has been used on rectified images and accuracy assessment has been assessed for thematic accuracy. For this purpose, 1987 dated Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), 2013 dated Landsat 8 Operational Land Imagery (OLI) were used in the study. The land use and land cover change in study area between 1987 and 2013 has been revealed with change matrix of “from-to” analysis by using obtained temporal land use maps. At the end of the this change detection study, the biggest change has occurred in settlement area within 26 years period. When population registration has examined, records has shown that is a condition that overlaps with the population increase since 1987. And that change has come from the decrease in forest/ green areas and agriculture/open areas to increase in settlement areas. The changes that have occurred within the inspection period indicated the expected outcomes of high population increase. It is clearly seen that there is a significant increase in the urban elements.
