Abstract
This study presents the procedures and results of developing Korean national historical geography map. From 1990s with the popular use of World Wide Web, many historical geography maps has been newly digitalized using GIS software resulting in digital maps. This procedure changed the status of maps from simple figures on a paper to a complex body of huge amount of information. Consequently, digital map making procedure required extensive cooperation including geographers, historians, GIS programmers, and Web designers. This study investigates definition and characteristics of historical geography maps in Korea. In developing the historical geography maps, basic required information is organized as 4 major subjects: administrative regions over time, natural environments, transportation networks, and a gazetteer database. For each subject, categories, contents, and construction methods are introduced. Historical geography maps are considered as a big database covering complex information about geography, history, and their interaction over time. Consequently, updates and managements of the database become critical issues in historical geography maps. Basic data management methods are briefly introduced.
