Abstract
The research of cartographic documents can provide, among certain periods, how the human occupation of a particular area. The main purpose of this paper is to develop the evolution of the central area of Rio de Janeiro through its historical and geographical survey-mapping. The study involved the current districts of: Centro, Saúde, Gamboa, Cidade Nova, Glória, Santo Cristo and part of São Cristóvão. After researches on bibliography and survey-mapping, the work were done by identifying landmarks and preserved historical sites, which allowed the juxtaposition of historical maps of the area, after processing, based on current mapping. For the analysis, were used maps from many periods, since the seventeenth century, until the present day, looking for details and information contained in the documents, trying to find remarkable control points (such as buildings and historical monuments, for example) in order to identify them and correlate them, allowing its geoprocessing. Through these parameters, cartographic products were drawn up showing the evolution history-space enabling a accomplish of comparative studies, showing the evolution of the factors of amendment of the local landscape and the degree of change, taking into account the historical context of Rio de Janeiro. In the final stages, Digital Elevation Models (DEM) were produced from the central area of the city of Rio de Janeiro in different seasons, which would establish comparative elements in the evolution of the landscape of the city. Starting up the study with planimetric and altimetric data from nowadays, which were created the current DEM, were added information regarding altimetry, reconstructing elevations that were raised (Morro do Castelo, Santo Antônio, José Dias), and whether removing information about the amount of landfill occurred.
