Abstract
Since the mid-sixties of the 20-th century a dozen or so regional geo-graphical atlases have been developed and issued in Poland. Now, given the enormous resources of knowledge accumulated in a variety of geospatial databases, there is a need for a single, synthetic cartographic mapping, also for Kujawsko-Pomorskie/Kuyavian and Pomeranian Region. Given the need for a modern, relatively complete and dynamic cartographic monograph, with a potential to have its statistical socio-economic content frequently updated, an electronic version was also considered. It was decided, at the same time, that the atlas should take the form of a publicly accessible web application, the anticipated content of the work taken into account (of general geographic and statistical nature), there are definitely higher expectations of the population, compared to those of the past. This is perfectly understandable as the twenty-first century population, infor-mation-related, and thus increasingly aware requires such studies to a much greater extent than ever before. Therefore, the operation of atlas applications on desktops, notebooks and mobile one-touch devices such as smartphones was taken into account. In the application, whose most frequently occurring scales are those of one to half a million and one to one million, the database of general graphics was used at 1: 250 000, available in Poland free of charge from 12th July. The use of this existing database for thematic maps, was caused by a very short time to develop the entire atlas. A potential positive effect of this concept assumed to draw up the atlas, based on the existing base maps is the fact that the thematic content of the atlas corresponds, in the sense of a complementary supplement to already developed thematic maps, with the existing content of geoportals at the level of municipalities, communes and the entire region. This atlas is to include six thematic sections (1. General Issues; 2. Natural Environment; 3. Natural Resources and Environmental Preservation; 4. Society; 5. Economy; 6. Strategy of the Province Development), and about one hundred forty compositions of maps, drawn up on the basis of its own, author’s latest research results and the recent statistical and environmental databases, showing the current status of our province, as well as a pro-spective diagnosis for the regional development. In a general sense, the concept of web-based application atlas is an original scientific thematic work, with no intention to duplicate national geoportal material, already available on the Internet. The internet atlas of Kuyavian and Pomeranian Province is an innovative web-based system, which includes both the information portal with social features and the atlas application equipped with a number of tools and interactive functionalities. The atlas application, made up of a set of maps collected in the vector format, presents the user a palette of possibilities, among other things, a selection of maps from the available list (menu divided into 6 main categories and subsequent subcategories levels), viewing maps with details characteristic for different scales (including 1: 500,000 1: 1,000,000 et al.).
