Abstract
This presentation aims to show a reflection from the point of view of managers and technicians of a cartographic and statistical operation, such as the National Atlas of Spain, which is included both in the National Statistical Plan as in the National Cartographic Plan, about the role that the national atlas can play as a bridge between the geospatial field, dominated by the perspective of National Mapping Agencies, and the field of statistics, which depends on the National Statistical Institutes. The co-existence of National Atlas Data (NAD) (mapping agencies) and Statistical Atlas Data (SAD) (statistical institutes) and the benefits and conditions for their possible integration are presented. The role of national atlas information systems, attending its double nature of product and platform of services, can be to integrate Statistical and Spatial information in a more friendly and practical way. It will be shown the new ideas and works in order to focus on a storytelling-based national atlas with interactive maps. Finally, from the duality of the National Atlas of Spain, which is between the National Statistical System and the National Mapping System, it was born a proposal in this sense from the National Atlas of Spain to the Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Statistics of Spain. It is the pilot project that was approved for the supply/exchange/dissemination of statistical data to the National Atlas of Spain from the statistical units of the Spanish Statistical System. This project aims to solve one of the most important necessities of the atlas related to the information supply, the necessities of high quality but easy made cartography for the statistical services and the standardization requirements from the national statistical institutes. All the difficulties and results up to this moment are showed in detail.
