Abstract
Physical 3D maps have a fine history in cartography and require the highest level of craftsmanship and artistic talent from a cartographer. Technology of 3D printing can be used for production of maps. Technology saves cartographers time and enables multiple reproduction of the same map, without painstaking manual labor. Despite all the technology, proper use of well-established cartographic principles and techniques, separates good 3D printed map from a poor one. Physical 3D Map of the Nordic Center Planica was produced with 3D printing. The main purpose of the map was to promote and clarify future development of the sports center and to show its final infrastructure and landscaping. We will describe data, technology and design decisions used in making of the map. We will also discuss cartographic principles and techniques used in the making of the map and lessons learned.
