Abstract
Sediment classification of seabed areas is relevant for navigation and military operations. In order to present this information to the users, cartographic products should be used. However, even for a small area map, it is necessary to collect a large amount of samples of the sea bottom which are analyzed by experts. This paper describes a model to support a supervised classification of marine sediments using Folk’s classification approach which is implemented computationally through fuzzy logic. The model output is the sediment classification for each sample. In addition, samples that need more detailed examination are pointed out by the model too. As a result, the application enhances efficiency and facilitates the sediment analysis by reducing efforts and time, as the experts’ work would be concentrated on the most complicated samples.
