Abstract
The lack of adequate urban planning in most cities results in a series of social and environmental problems, which demand the formulation and application of appropriate management measures on a municipal scale, that integrate economic development with the preservation/conservation of natural resources. This study presents a proposal for urban planning on a municipal scale, based on a functional zoning approach to the geo-ecological diagnosis of the municipality of Nova Russas, in the Brazilian state of Ceará. In addition to this zoning, the study provides suggestions for the adequate management of the zones delimited in the analysis. Overall, the results of the study provide a set of important strategies that should guarantee the sustainable development of the municipality.
