Abstract
Nations are beginning to prepare for the 2020 round of censuses. Cartographic activities fall into two general categories: mapping to conduct the census; and cartographic visualizations of the results of the census. National spatial data infrastructures (NSDI) offer important geospatial data content. Census preparations and field operations collect the balance of required geospatial information. Census managers, enumerators, and data users make use of maps in various forms and environments. Cartographic tools range from traditional paper maps to current GIS and mapping technology based on experience, knowledge, resources, and risk tolerance. Research into these geospatial processes are an important ingredient, with particular emphasis on the address collection, data management, and quality assurance. This presentation offers a perspective road map of options and decision points in planning a mapping program for a national census.
