Abstract
This article describes the process of creating a proposal for a campus map, using as object of study the campus of Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) in Brazil and intends to contribute with reflections about the cartographic representation and communication, with the intention of qualifying the effectiveness and functionality of thematic maps. The main goal of the work consisted in the preparation of a map based on the concepts of cartography and cartographic communication, focusing on potential users and in the qualification of the representation of that space. A University campus is inserted in a given geographical spaces as an institution that determines the flows of varied types and with many different purposes, site development and dissemination of scientific knowledge implies directly in traffic of people who use the campus daily or sporadically. As the aim of geographical space is the focus of representation in maps, which may have multiple functions, from planning support on the campus to the recognition of the different functions performed in different locations, in this case, as for permanent users, students, teachers and servers, or as a means of information to locate something of particular interest from a public that sporadically come to campus (tertiary services attendants, participants of events, courses and other). The Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) has several campuses in the city of Salvador and it also has one campus in the countryside of Bahia, Ondina-Federação are the largest campus in extent, and both contain the largest number of courses and activities. The methodology was derived from a research on other examples of campus maps, questioning people from the community satellite image, topographic plant, and data collection in the field and laboratory work for scanning of information. The graphical representation of this campus, which is disclosed on the website of the University and campus orientation boards, is inconsistent to the theory of cartographic communication. Such models when they are reviewed, they demonstrate the inefficiency, or inappropriateness of what was represented, resulting in difficulties of understanding on the part of the reader, or even there is no understanding when seeking for the information that there are delineated by symbols, lines and texts. Thus, this reformulation was proposed in the course of Production of Maps at Bachelor in Surveying and Cartography Engineering. This proposal was based on the precepts of cartography, i.e. language of maps and cartographic communication. The maps were designed from elements of reality as location, elements which abstract reality and apply the selection, classification, simplification of what would be represented. With the basic features presentation such as: scale, projection and appropriate symbology. Cartographic design was influenced by the likely users of the maps, so if would seek to develop layouts and symbolism that could allow easy handling and understanding by ordinary individuals, without special training in reading maps. As results were produced a University Federal of Bahia campus map.
