Abstract
The paper presents an analysis of the evolution of urban land use in the vicinity of the Unified Center of Education (UCE) of Paz, between 2002 and 2010. This school was built in 2004 and is located in the northern zone of São Paulo - SP. It is considered a peripheral area and is characterized by the occurrence of slums. Images of 2002, 2004, 2007 and 2010 were used for classification of the use and occupation of its surroundings (600m) and also to develop a model that identifies the transition matrix of the uses and expresses the growth rate of each class considered. Transition matrices used were obtained from spatially explicit model-based and cellular automata. The model was developed in the DINAMICA program and enabled the identification of patterns of classes of dynamic urban land use behavior analyzed. The results indicate that the rate of growth of slums in the period was 44.9%, the forested areas were reduced 28.43% and other types of households had no significant growth. Until the construction of the equipment, in 2004, the percentage growth of the settlements was 7.17%. Between 2004 and 2007, the slum grew 24.51% and 18.31% of non-urbanized areas began to be occupied irregularly.
