Abstract
The understanding of intra urban space in cities requires the observation and identification of the relationship between spatial patterns for the unveiling of its contents to understand the processes involved in the production and reproduction of these spaces. When we are analyzing the intra urban space, one must realize that this space is the result of a link between shape and function. Thus, it is not just the product of social relations, but also, affects it, hence the need to know and act upon the cities. The spatial dispersion of cities, given the denial of their own condition, and the discontinuity of the intra urban space are the new elements that intensify the segmentation, fragmentation and spatial segregation in the cities, central category of analysis in this research. Geo-technologies are commonly used to acquire detailed information of land cover on the spatial level of detail suitable for analysis of urban space. The methodology proposed in this research aims to articulate the use of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems combining land-use and land-cover information with socioeconomic and population data of the 2010 census conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, using the smallest cadastral unit, the census tract, considering that socio-spatial segregation in the intra urban space is given in "spaces to live in", forming homogeneous sets (condominiums, slums, etc). In this context, the objective of this research is to demonstrate that the integrated analysis of urban spatial patterns and indices of quality of life reveals elements for understanding the intra urban space of the city of Marilia. The aim of the research is its application in updating information of urban areas to subsidize urban planning and land management, considering that in recent years we have confronted misguided public policies carried out by the State and, with the assumption that it authorizes the action of social actors who produce and reproduce this fragmented intra urban space, we can affirm that it may also be responsible for public policies of spatial and social integration and, consequently, contribute and work towards improving the quality of life of the population. Therefore, the area chosen as the object of this research is the city of Marilia/SP, seen as an integrated whole. Located in western state of Sao Paulo and 443 kilometers away from the capital, the city is featured for its rapid growth and urban development. In eighty years, Marília has grown spatially and demographically, making new more complex spatial forms overlapping the already established intra urban space objects, intensifying the process of spatial segregation and turning this particular city fertile soil for analysis.
