Abstract
It is widely believed that the main goal of using cartographic database is the automation of map production process. No doubt, such form of data structure can really be a lot of help in general-purpose and thematic mapping, in creation of atlases. But, in our opinion, besides map production, cartographic database must also permit to automate different informational processes. It means that some information (hidden from the eyes of users) can be extracted and processed by means of spatial analysis tools, if cartographic database is suitably organized. The final result can be presented in the form of different informational documents composed of structure charts, tables, graphics, diagrams, text blocks and others. The schemes of hydrographic network, the schemes of trackage or highways illustrate what a structure chart is. For the automated construction of the informational documents on the basis of the cartographic database, methods and algorithms for finding relationships between general-purpose objects (settlements, roads, hydrography and administrative boundaries) were developed. It should be noted, that by the construction of the informational documents not only cartographic database, but also the additional sources of information, such as digital topographic maps and thematic databases should be used. So using digital topographic maps will provide a more accurate cartometric calculations as well as a more correct determination of the relationships between objects. The use of thematic data will allow increasing the information content of created documents. Generated informational documents can be used in different cartographic issues, as an addition to the main content, or as illustrations in periodicals. Information received with mentioned methods, will serve as a basis in the development of new kinds of maps in the future.
