Abstract
The cartographic product is an abstraction of reality, which represents information in a simplified manner to meet particular purpose. The quality makes a connection between the spatial data set and an model the real world, through the technical specifications. Technological progress has provided the development of tools for professionals in the geospatial area, and with it, the growth of production. Furthermore, it has facilitated access and consequently the increase in demand for geospatial information by users. To follow this development, with respect to the quality of spatial data, it is understood the establishment and adoption of standards is necessary. It should be compose and consider essential parameters relating to the "what" and "how" to evaluate. Besides the positional accuracy and semantics, present since analog mapping, other relevant factors to the technological development itself, should be considered as the logical consistency and temporal, lineage and integrity of geospatial datasets. From the need for common use, arises the adoption of standards and national standards, both for the description and for data sharing. The National Spatial Data Infrastructure of Brazil (NSDI of Brazil) aims to provide cartographic products to society, that need to be documented in metadata which facilitate access to spatial data, and report on aspects relating to the quality of the data set. This paper presents a method for quality inspection of geospatial data sets, based on international standards and quality elements. The methodology is being implemented by the Department of Cartography, the Directorate of Geosciences of IBGE. And, in addition, collaborates with elaboration of technical specifications for evaluate the quality of cartographic products.
